Polestar Technologies (http://polestartech.com/), a leader in the development of optical sensor technology, has won a $ 700K enhancement to an existing contract with the US Army to build noninvasive CO2 sensors for soldiers with traumatic head injuries. This is the third phase of funding for this successful program.
Up to 320,000 soldiers have experienced traumatic brain injuries in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Having a reliable way to measure arterial CO2 during emergency medical treatment can save lives in a war zone and in civilian emergencies. Our current prototype system is hand held and battery powered for ease of use in either situation. Under the Enhancement Program Polestar will develop the system further and ruggedize it for use in operational environments.
Polestar Technologies R&D programs focus on optical sensor technologies and have grown significantly in the last few years. Previous government contracts with NASA and NIH supported the development of oxygen (O2) and pH sensors that Polestar then modified for the commercial market. Subsequently, Polestar developed a carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor. Today, Polestar offers the only 3-in-1 monitoring system for measuring O2, pH, and CO2 simultaneously, and the system is used in the biopharmaceutical, regenerative medicine, bio-fuel, and pure water markets.
Polestar Technologies was founded in 1993 to conduct contract research for NIH, NASA, DARPA and other government agencies. The company has successfully applied an array of advanced technologies to solve difficult problems, often through collaboration with universities and national laboratories. Polestars sensor products are the direct result of that research and are used by Fortune 100 companies worldwide. Polestar continues to perform critical research and technology development for the Department of Defense and other government agencies and develops new sensor products for the global marketplace.
